This year’s outdoor Summer Theatre is wonderfully clever and this History (Abridged) is the best yet. The three Outwits race through the story of Christchurch from the moa hunters right up to present day Council conflicts. The more knowledge you have of local history and culture the more you’ll enjoy this romp based on “facts, facets, and fallacies”. Appropriately, the stage is a container.
There are wonderful lyrics, e.g.” The Magpies” (with apologies to Dennis Glover) and an Abba tune where “Waterloo” becomes “Portaloo.”
There are poignant moments too, when the actors tell of their own experiences of 22 February, but they’re not serious for long. Allusions to the Lord of the Rings, with the “precious” Parker/parka are truly precious. Quality comic reflections of our own lives are extremely rare these days. Don’t miss this wonderful show.
“The Outwits really do us proud
with warm ovation from the crowd.”

Was so good to laugh loudly … They were wonderful.

I get the impression from your blog that Christchurch is full of humour and creativity. What fabulous events keep happening, and so many of them in the outdoors.

Fi, it was so good I’m hoping to see it again before the season ends.
Juliet, there are fabulous things happening here, and also many people still in most dreadful circumstances. I tend to accentuate the positive, and I’m so lucky to have a liveable home, a satisfying job, and a supportive husband.

Thanks Andy. I understand that the show was filmed on Thursday evening and there will be a dvd available for those who didn’t get to see it (and those who’d love to see it again). Go to Bethere.co.nz to register if you want to be informed when it’s available.
