With the temperature hitting 30 degrees it was time for a trip to New Brighton.
Paddling in the sea was cool and refreshing, but there’s no shade, except under the pier.
The beach at New Brighton is lovely and there’s lots of good things happening in the area, but you’d never know it from the sad state of the shopping mall. There’s been talk of moving the Re-start Mall there, but I don’t think many people these days would go to New Brighton to shop. The beach is the only real attraction, and it’s well worth a visit, especially on a hot day.
“New Brighton is the place to stop
to see the sea, but not to shop.”
Possibly named after Brighton in Sussex. England? Pier.. think the one back in Uk was burnt down. but their beach there is all pebbles, I remember taking my Kiwi partner there, Mum said go to the local beach for the day, we were in Surrey, so off down to Brighton, what no sand he said, where are we going to sit, I said on the pebbles, oh did he moan, I said we think nothing off it as not used to sand around here, but I have seen an old post card of Brighton. Sussex with sandy beach, makes me wonder if the pebbles were put there during WW2 for some reason.. Used to love the Pier in the Sussex one, had amusements there, ice cream for sale etc..
thanks for reminding me of home! Perhaps one day will visit South Island and see NZ Brighton Beach!

I believe New Brighton was named after the one in Sussex, and it has a beautiful sandy beach. I guess it’s because of the pebbles that English beaches have deckchairs for hire.
When I was a child there was a pier at New Brighton with amusements, similar to the British one, That pier became run down and was demolished in the 1960’s, and this new one built in 1997. It is the longest ocean pier in Australasia (300 metres).

I was at New Brighton beach about 4pm last evening with 3 grandsons aged 10, 6 and 4 years. They loved jumping the waves and playing in the whale pool. We bought the proverbial fish ‘n chips, as is our family tradition, for tea. The Nor’ west wind was hot and gusty and there was a brief convection shower of rain so we scurried home to Nana’s house (my place) to eat tea with the necessary tomato sauce. A perfect Canterbury day!

That sounds like an ideal way to spend an evening with grandsons on the hottest day of summer.
