I saw my first Pop Up Penguin yesterday down Shirley Road, but couldn’t stop for a photo. Today I had the opportunity to view one close up outside the Town Hall and photograph it.

The artist is Jen McBride and the sponsor is Southern Eye Specialists (who’ve just done my cataract operation). Apparently since 2019 Southern Eye Specialists have been running a knitting project in their reception to give patients something interesting to do between tests and assessments. Knitted squares are then sewn together to make blankets that are donated to Dog Watch Sanctuary Trust. This meant a penguin painted with a fair isle knitting pattern was an ideal choice for sponsorship.
Today I also saw my first Lime E-bike. They are actually bright orange, rather than green. The man riding it said the helmet had disappeared – bound to happen, I suspect. I wonder if the helmets have some kind of tracking device? What will happen to riders caught without a helmet?
The penguins brighten up our city
with patterns colourful and pretty
I shall look forward to spotting the penguins around town. I’ve seen the bright e-bikes too – they’re not easy to miss. If the helmet is the same colour it wouldn’t be easy to make off with, you would think.

An opportunity for lots of fun seeking penguins all around town. We can also keep a lookout for kidnapped bike helmets.
