Signs at Verkerks shop saying their pork is female intrigued me.
I asked why, and was told they buy only female pigs. Apparently their meat is more tender. The meat of male pigs smells and tastes differently, and discerning customers, especially Asians, can tell. I wonder what happens to the male pigs? Presumably they go to less discerning butchers and customers.
Apologies to vegetarians for this post.
“”As a feminist should I baulk
at eating even female pork?”
Intriguing. I wonder if it’s the same for all meat. Aunty Google tells me that capons are considered tastier than roosters! Now I am wondering how much of the meat we eat is from de-sexed animals.

A friend has told me lambs, calves, and pigs that are destined to be eaten, rather than bred from, are neutered quite young if they are males. Apparently few people want to eat entire males.

I do eat meat but most days I don’t mind if I miss it entirely. I love my veggies.
