One of my favourite devices is my Sony Walkman MP3 player. I use it every day, and always take it with me if I’m travelling. If I wake during the night I put it on to listen to RNZ national or a podcast, and I listen to it outside when I’m gardening.
Yesterday I was in the garden, and because I was wearing a skirt with no pockets I had the player on a lanyard round my neck. After a while I went to turn it off, and couldn’t! Somehow it had got stuck on ‘Hold’ and nothing I could do would change that setting. I came inside and asked Aunty Google for help. That’s when I discovered that my walkman/walkperson is a veteran, even though it’s no more than ten years old. The current ones look like smartphones, and nothing like mine. I have a model NWD and now they’re up to NWZ. Some hints suggested I should open up the whole machine to turn off Hold, which was a more drastic operation than I wanted to contemplate. Others said turn off the Hold button, and I couldn’t see any such button.
I removed the earphones, and near their hole was a round piece that said Hold with an arrow. I tried unsuccessfuly to turn this, then discovered a metal bit on the back that I could turn, and miraculously the Hold was released. Oh, the relief! My walkperson and I have now resumed our usual convivial relationship.
“My naughty player went on Hold
but now it’s back within the fold.”
I am very impressed that you could fix it

It’s easy, once you know how.
