We just had a very scary earthquake that went on and on, and we’re currently experiencing aftershocks. The first quake at 12.02am was 6.6, centred near Hanmer Springs, and there’ve since been two that were more than 5. Can’t help wondering if the super moon has had seismic effects. No apparent damage here, but lots of scary rattles. Facebook has kindly set up a page where everyone can register whether they’re safe, and you can check on friends – provided of course that you have internet access. Glad we still have electricity and water. I’ve made a cup of tea and eaten some medicinal chocolate, but I think it’ll be a while before I can go back to sleep!
My thoughts are with you tonight and throughout tomorrow – stay safe and stay positive.

Thank you. It’s scary to think this shake was actually stronger than the one in February 2011 where people died. We still have power, but apparently that’s out in Kapiti, and was cut in Nelson.

Quake has now been upgraded to 7.5. Plus tsunami warnings. Not much chance of sleep this morning.

Yours was the first post I looked for when I saw the news. Thinking of your corner of the world and hoping all stay safe. Debra

Thanks, Debra. It seems that Christchurch has suffered less than other areas this time.

So sorry to hear the news, and hope all are safe with minimum damage. Thanks for your input, and medicinal chocolate sounds like a great idea!

Thanks, Marlene. We are okay, but others are definitely not. Hard for students who have important national exams today.

Glad to know you were spared the shaking. It was very scary here. I was relieved we still had electricity and therefore internet access.

The aftershocks kept me awake till 3.00 am. The Supermoon was pretty bright too so I up and took photos – pretty awesome coming in and out of wind-blown clouds.

Hope you are okay, Sue. I took photos of the moon between clouds last evening.
This morning I’ve been at Charities Services AGM. There were a couple of quakes during the meeting, but not too bad.

Not a good night! But I am glad we didn’t lose power etc. Feeling worried about the people further north.

Yes, horrible to be cut off and have no power. This time we seem to have been the lucky ones, although hard for seaside dwellers who had to evacuate.

I was thinking about you, as you are the only blogger/person that I have been following who lives in NZ. I hope everyone is safe and these aftershocks stop rattling everyone’s nerves.

It’s good to get your message, Susanne. Things in Christchurch are okay – I haven’t felt any aftershocks this morning. It’s not so good further north in Kaikoura where 1200 marooned tourists are being evacuated today by sea and air, because the roads and rail are blocked.
