Have you heard of Foucault? I hadn’t, but he turned up in Monday’s cryptic crossword with the clue: “Foucault’s device might end up on a chimney in Scotland”. I googled him, but couldn’t find anything about Michel Foucault, Philosopher, that fitted.
Clever Stephen knew that there was another Foucault (Jean-Bernard-Leon, a physicist) who had used a pendulum to demonstrate the rotation of the earth. Sure enough, pendulum was the answer (no thanks to Google). Perhaps it might be used to check the angle of Scottish chimneys?
On Tuesday I happened to climb the staircase above The Physics Room (that’s another blog post), and there before me was this graffiti:
Am I fated to be followed by Foucault (either Michel or Jean-Bernard-Leon), and where will we meet next?
“I do not wish to read Michel
or other Foucault, J-B-L.”
