The Lantern Parade that launched this year’s Kidsfest was popular. Hundreds of families turned out on a very cold night to join in the fun.
The umbrellas fringed by tiny lights were particularly attractive (see slide show below). I saw several lanterns that had open flames in them go floating off in the sky, and wondered what happens when they land?
After the parade I headed home, then at 6.30pm heard the sound of fireworks. We had a great view of these from our front door. I’d wondered why the new towers at the Margaret Mahy Playground had been temporarily fenced off, and I guess it was because the fireworks were inside. Inner city living is definitely looking up when we have such a good show so close to home.

much nearer than they’ve been before.”
