We dined out at a favourite local restaurant to mark the beginning of a new phase. When we’d finished our meal and were about to head for home the manager kindly offered us a complimentary liqueur. Stephen had brandy, and I asked for a Tia Maria. I declined the offer of ice with this, and was surprised to find it served in a brandy glass with a straw.
Maybe this is the current fashion? It’s a while since I’ve had a liqueur at a restaurant. It tasted fine through the straw, but when I got to the last bit I couldn’t bear to noisily slurp it, so had to remove the straw and drink it in the traditional way. I’ve heard of sipping cider through a straw, but this seemed silly. There was no straw with Stephen’s brandy.
“It seems to me a silly flaw
to serve liqueur with a straw.”
