The Piano, our new centre for music and the arts, is almost finished and should be open by mid-August.
I was delighted to learn that events for this year’s Word festival will be held there. It’s such a relief to have more entertainment available within walking distance of home – makes me feel that the central city is truly on its way back.
What a shame that those who designed the building apparently didn’t realise that the copper cladding used gives runoff that is poisonous to waterways such as the Avon/Otakaro River. It’s also a shame that Owen Dippie’s beautiful ballerina has been partly obscured by the new building.
She can still be more clearly seen from the Margaret Mahy Playground.
“I look forward to The Piano
but worry where runoff will go.”
