The other half of the Heathcote Towpath was our goal this week. We started by walking under the Tunnel Road Bridge. This path is sealed, but available only at low tide. As we continued some of the path was muddy, but quite manageable, and the views across the saltmarsh are lovely.
It’s hard to believe all the industry and retail of Ferry Road is so close. The buildings are hidden behind trees, and most are securely fenced. It’s a shame that workers don’t have access to the water’s edge, as this would be a lovely lunch spot in summer. We continued up to the Ferrymead Bridge, then returned via Ferry Road, where much new building is taking place. Another option would have been to retrace our steps along the towpath, but I’d had enough mud.
“Where we walked ships had once been towed
by river, close to Ferry Road.”
