Our tickets for “Hairspray” were part of a package deal, and I knew none of the songs beforehand. The music and dancing showed amazing skill and stamina from the Showbiz performers and made you want to dance too. Set in the 1960’s with authentic costumes and hairdos, the theme of the show was racial integration. It was also about society’s attitude towards plus-size women, and it was wonderful to see a shorter, shapely woman in the lead role, as well as a talented cross-dresser as her mother ‘of inestimable girth’. My one quibble was that some of the lines were hard to discern, possible due to the American accents. There were some very clever pieces, and I was sorry to miss other bits. I read a synopsis before I went and was glad I had. I’m sure this will prove to be another Showbiz sellout.
