The people at Overground Undergound Archaeology are part of a team who’ve created a pop-up exhibition ‘Buried Treasure’ of some of the items which have been discovered beneath demolished buildings.
The exhibition can be seen at The Commons on weekends, and includes an opportunity for children to dig for ‘treasure’. There are also a couple of long drops on display, illustrating the kind of temporary facilities some locals were obliged to use post earthquakes.
We just dug a hole and used a bucket – luckily not for long.
It’s important to remember how people coped immediately post-quake. We all did well, but for many people the pain and stress is still there. There is so much ongoing uncertainty, especially when we have aftershocks like last Wednesday’s.

help others understand it too.”
