Ten years had passed since I last walked City to Surf. When Christine invited me to join her and Ready Teddy for the shortened version (6km) I agreed and registered at the last minute, without any preparation or training. It was hot, with the temperature reaching 30 degrees. We went at a leisurely pace, taking 1 hour and 56 minutes to complete the 6km. In 2006 I had done 12 km in two hours and 20 minutes, also at a leisurely pace. This year there didn’t seem to be nearly as many interesting costumes. We were intrigued by the Hagar group, who work with the survivors of modern day slavery, and were symbolically tied together.
Afterwards we had free entry to Ferrymead Historicl Park, an added bonus. The tram ride was an especially welcome chance to rest my weary legs.
“I rarely walk so far these days
it felt good to achieve six Ks.”
