October 27th is the twentieth anniversary of the day my mother Phyllis died.
My favourite photo of her is this one taken in the “roaring twenties”.
This 1950’s family portrait, probably taken by my brother, shows me posed inelegantly.
This one was taken on her 80th birthday. She was a keen knitter and she’d made the jersey herself.
When she died I planted Breath of Heaven to remember her by. This shrub featured in my childhood garden>
My mother had some quirky traits, and is fondly remembered. The memories provoke smiles, not sadness.
“My mother’s often in my thoughts
with recollections of all sorts.”
What a fabulous twin set your mother had knitted. that pattern is called Chevron. Regarding the photo of you showing your knickers I think you should get it photo shopped into you wearing trousers or you wearing a longer skirt as it is a great photo of your family . Were you an only child???s. My mother had Breath of Heaven in her garden as well. I think it would make a lovely hedge.

Jenny, I had a brother who was 12 years older, and a keen photographer, which is why I think he may have taken this photo. Not sure about photo-shopping – seems dishonest somehow.

A beautiful memento. 🙂 Your mother poses so elegantly in all the photos. I laughed at your pose. When I was about 10, an elderly female relative was very disgruntled with my behaviour at her afternoon tea party. She listed all my sins to my mother during the tea party ( my mother told me later). Apparently my worst sin was to slump in the chair with my legs apart. I was quite sure I had done no such thing, and didn’t ever really forgive her for her unjust criticisms.

I like that story, Gallivanta.
My mother did yoga for many years, which kept her fit and elegant. After she’d had a hip replacement (aged 78), the district nurse came and asked how was her other hip. Mother promptly lifted the other leg into a half lotus pose.
