I’ve always admired the Hundertwasser flag which he gifted to New Zealand in 1983.
I have no interest in the current flag project, but I was pleased when I saw that one of the original 40 options was a “new Hundertwasser” and thought I might vote for it. Sadly it didn’t make it to the final four. One of them does have a koru, but it’s unattractive in black and white. To my chagrin I may have to follow Winston Peters’ suggestion that we write “No change” across the first ballot paper in the hope that the second referencdum might then be cancelled – although I think it’s a forlorn hope.
I’m totally fed up with all this expensive flag business, which is surely intended to distract us from matters such as the TPPA and our inadequate refugee quota. I’m a proud citizen of Aotearoa but I really don’t care what our flag looks like. I’m inclined to Virginia Woolf’s point of view: “As a woman I have no country, As a woman I want no country. As a woman my country is the whole world.”
“There’s no need for this brand new flag
especially with its high price tag.”
