We spent the weekend at Peel Forest and it was good to get away from Christchurch for a few days and head towards the snowy mountains.
Peel Forest Farmstay was our destination, where hosts Jenny and Steve Deans were welcoming and friendly. The large kitchen had a wood range, that kept everything warm and provided ample hot water. Upstairs we had a comfortable double room with views of trees, and a wonderful dawn chorus.
On the verandah were a number of old hospital beds, similar to those I remember from my childhood home. This would be a lovely place to sleep in summer, but not at this time of year!
The farm has a flock of forty chooks. I was privileged to collect the eggs, some of which became our breakfast. The Deans also have horses you can ride.
Overall a great place for a weekend getaway and a taste of rural life.
