Our home is once more complete as we have adopted a new feline friend. He’s a two-year-old neutered silver Burmilla (actually a Tiffanie), with the official name ‘Avon Ziggie Stardust’. We will simply call him Ziggy. We’ve never previously chosen a ‘designer’ cat, but Bentley rather spoiled us for ordinary moggies.
The people who bred him had intended to keep him as a household pet, but because they often have baby cats in the house he’d spent a lot of time in an outside run with his sister Lily. He’s never been loose outside, so our garden will hold lots of excitment for him, once he’s allowed out. We plan to keep him shut indoors for the first couple of weeks while he gets used to us. This isn’t easy with current temperatures in the high twenties, but we’ve got a few windows we can leave open just a fraction.
Ziggy spent the first couple of days hiding, usually under our bed. On Saturday he started to get more confident and willing to accept lots of strokes – more than willing! He’s a real smoocher, winds himself around our legs, and displays his fluffy tummy. He’s not yet keen to be picked up or sit on a lap, but that will come. When he’s not sleeping or smooching he darts all around the house, and climbs over everything.
Saturday evening I found he’d climbed onto my computer chair, and I took his first photo.
He’s since shown a preference for a bedroom chair where there’s an ancient teddy bear for him to cuddle up to. Maybe it reminds him of his sister?
I’m on leave for another week, with plenty of time to keep him company (and to vacuum up any loose cat hair).
“We’re pleased that Ziggy’s here with us.
We’ll give him lots of love and fuss.”
Ziggy is beautiful. It is so interesting getting to know a new
personality in the house.

Yes, he’s quite different to Bentley, our previous cat.

Absolutely love the name you gave him!

We’re glad that his ‘official’ name had a part we liked. I always think it’s unkind to rename cats, although I suspect it’s the tone of voice they respond to rather than the actual name.

What a wonderful looking cat Ruth. You will love him to bits. and ti does take time for him to adjust to this foreign place…….I know you are sensitive to cats so will give him the space he needs to learn the nooks and crannies and how you both function. Great, great news

We both found it very hard being cat-less, and will be patient with him as he acclimatizes to a new home.

Ziggy looks gorgeous, did you get him from Tufftietows out at Hororata – I know they breed Tiffanies. Thats where I got one of my Birman boys.
That last shot of him on the chair with the teddy, he looks quite content, im sure he will settle in quickly. On really hot days I close the curtains on the sunny side of the house, it makes a real difference to keeping the indoor temp down.

We got him from Craig Thomas at Hororata. I didn’t know they called themselves Tufftietows. Their website is a Aburmesewhanau. With windows open just a fraction the heat seems bearable. If it gets too much I’m going to put the heat pump on.
Another friend has a Birman and says she’s never really got used to sitting on laps or being picked up. However, we’re determined that Ziggy will have to learn that his role is to be a lap cat, as Bentley was.

A very warm and furry welcome to Ziggy. He has picked the best parents – so he is clearly a very intelligent cat. Love to you all from the boys … and Olwyn too!
