When wastewater repairs started in our small street we were told that our end was to be done using “trenchless technology”, but this has proved impossible. Early yesterday morning a workman came to the door and warned us to close our windows because they were about to start excavating and there would be lots of dust.
I asked why a trench now needed to be dug and was told that while they’d hoped to do it “trenchlessly” they’d found that the underground pipe, which should be straight, had been pushed into wavy curves by the earthquakes. Consequently a trench is needed and the pipe will have to be replaced. This kind of plan change must happen all the time. No wonder repairs take longer than expected.
“They thought this job was not so big
but now they know they have to dig.”
A pipe with wavy curves would make an interesting photo; the workers must see some extraordinary sights.

I would dearly love to have a photo.

Would they take one for you?

I think they only know because of underground robot cameras. The trench has been filled in now and they should seal the road again tomorrow.

Oh well; good to have the work done, anyway.
