We loved the Court Theatre’s version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’. With wonderful music and dancing, and many lines and lyrics given a local flavour, this was a superb evening’s entertainment.
‘The Mikado’ was the first live show I ever saw, as a child, when the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company came to Christchurch. The only other time I remember seeing it performed live was when a daughter took part in an Intermediate School production, and of course the music and songs are very familiar. I thought Linda Milligan was outstanding as The Mikado. Her diction was so clear I heard every word, but all the cast were excellent, even if I didn’t catch some lines. The dancing was great – a unusual treat to see tap dancing.
The season’s now been extended to 24 January, with seats available during the last week, so if you haven’t seen it, book now!
“With G and S’s lines so clever,
is this the best Mikado ever?”
I also saw the Doyly Carte production of the Mikado as a child in Ch Ch. Have always loved G & S. Saw The Court show before Christmas and thought it excellent. Also belated Happy Birthday – welcome to the Gold Card Brigade

Thank you, Ann.
It’s interesting how many of us have a shared memory of the D’Oyly Carte show. I was just talking to a friend who said she saw them in Dunedin as a child – must have been the same tour.

I saw it many many years ago when my maths teacher was playing the lead – he was splendid and had fearsome long nails for the part.
I also appreciated this version – for the excellence, the humour and the totally unexpected local content – was well worth it 🙂
