This film is the true story of an older woman searching for the baby she was forced to give up when she was a teenager. I heard the original Philomena interviewed on BBC Woman’s Hour, so I knew what the outcome was going to be, but that knowledge in no way detracted from this heartrending story. Judi Dench is perfect as Philomena. Steve Coogan is excellent as the journalist who helps her search, with many scenes showing just the two of them.
The villain of this story is the Catholic Church, whose idea of sin led them to some un-Christian acts. I can only hope that attitudes may have improved over the last fifty years, and the latest Pope seems to indicate that possibility.
“How could they say that she had sinned
and needed to be disciplined?”
