Walking at low tide we saw dozens of empty tuatua shells.
The creatures that inhabit these had disappeared. Had they been eaten by birds? Or taken home to be made into fritters? Apparently they can live up to five years, but these tuatua have come to the end of their lives.
“These shellfish can be good to eat
made into fritters, nice and sweet,”
I’d be wondering about the good feast that someone had.

There were several areas of shells like this along the beach. It’s quite possible someone had been collecting them, but wouldn’t they take them home shells and all?

Had winter swells and tides exposed old empty shell beds I wonder?

I don’t think so. The empty shells looked quite fresh, as though the creatures had just abandoned them.
