The amaryllis belladonna lilies have come out.
These are known as naked ladies because their flowers appear before any leaves. Apparently in South Africa they’re called March lilies and that seems an appropriate name for them in Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s good to come across a plant name that’s meant for the Southern hemisphere. The nearby leaves in the photo have lots of white guano spots. That’s because these naked ladies are right underneath our bird feeder.
“The poo the birds drop all around
must help to fertilise the ground.”
