Everyone everywhere is asked to place flowers in road cones in honour of today’s earthquake anniversary. The purpose is to be a reflection to the past, and a positive wish for the future.
As I was walking home yesterday I saw flowers on an abandoned section and liberated them. They looked good stuck in road cones.
I found more unwanted flowers further along and picked those too, then walked two whole blocks without seeing a single cone – amazing! As I neared home I spied cones on the bridge, so my second lot of flowers went there. If you can’t find a cone it’s suggested you attached flowers to fences or lamp posts.
“To place a flower within a cone
shows Christchurch that we’re not alone.”
Good remembrance of what has been. We have front page information in the Dompost of the anniversary and info on inside pages too. Stay safe

At 12.51pm the Town Crier rang his bell in the Restart Mall and the large crowd there observed two minutes’ silence. I then sat by the river to have my lunch and watched all the flowers drifting by.

A few of our students saw all the cones outside our school on Antigua Street had no flowers on them, so before class, they picked flowers and decorated all the cones in front of the school. It was very beautiful, and a fitting way to remember today. Thanks for sharing this with us!

I spent some quiet time reflecting on the date as I sat by the lake today. How simple and fitting that the informal placing of flowers was encouraged as a commemoration.

I wonder how many people who’ve been Guides and Scouts (or a Brown Owl like me) remember that 22 February is “Thinking Day”?

I left Christchurch a few months after the Feb 22 earthquake. I’ll never forget that day, and all the memories I have are still so vivid! I have really enjoyed reading your updates, and it is great to see how the city is coming along.

I was thinking of you yesterday, and wondering how it would be commemorated in Christchurch.

It was good that there was a variety of commemoration options, so people could choose what suited them. A colleague who stayed in the office said cars and buses just kept going by, which rather surprised us.
