A hi-viz vest now covers a tree on the old Manufacturers’ Association site at the corner of Manchester Street and Cambridge Terrace.
It’s the work of Peter Majendie, who also created the earthquake memorial with the 185 white chairs. The tree has been decorated in preparation for tomorrow’s second anniversary of the February earthquake, to mark the launch of a new earthquake fund.
The border was sewn on to the cloth by Joyce Majendie, the artist’s wife.
“I’ve never seen a tree so bright
or hi-viz vest of such a height.”
I feel quite moved to see this. The ‘vest’ looks like a parachute, a mushroom, a fob cap,or a petticoat, but mostly a protection.
I am finding to much to admire about Christchurch as I read your blog. Thank you Ruth, and I will be sending loving thoughts on the anniversary.

What a wonderful work of art to commemorate the earthquake date. Hi-viz vests must be as commonly seen as road cones.

OG, they’re probably even more common than cones these days. Today there was a function beside the tree where the Canterbury Community Trust announced the launch of a $25million fund for community earthquake projects.

Is this tree still covered like this? If I go down to the book exchange I must look out for it. It will be a sad day for me when Piko move back to Barbados street. I love having them around the corner in Stanmore Road. I suppose you will be pleased to have them back

Yes, it’s still covered, and now surrounded by Gardens of Tranquillity. We will be delighted to have Piko back, but the new building is expected to take nine months, so you won’t lose them for a while yet.
