When four large TreeTech vehicles parked outside the cottage I was filled with foreboding. Were we about to lose our beloved riverbank trees? The vehicles moved off west along Kilmore Street. Beloved trees elsewhere will go today. I fear for the Poplar Crescent and Victoria Square (Ettie Rout’s tree?). When we are finally allowed back in the inner city will we recognise anything? Only the river Otakaro is constant.
When I returned from fetching the ‘Press’ a soldier on the checkpoint recognised me and waved me on. The policewoman stopped me and asked did I have a red permit? I told her I did, but I’d left it at home and was carrying only proof of residence as that was all that had been required the last few days. She said that from now on I wouldn’t be allowed in without a red permit (even though we’re supposed to be due for liberation!). I told her my husband doesn’t have a permit, and she said he must go and get one today. I said we would check with her on the way out in case orders change again. This kind of confusion just raises my stress levels, which had eased lately.
Yeh it is a real worry of what will be left of the city. It must be very hard to live in the warzone and not able to move freely in and out.
Take care and kia kaha
