My plans to go to work tomorrow have been thwarted. My office is in Community House in the central business district, within easy walking distance of my Cottage. I walked past the office early yesterday morning and there appeared to be little damage. However the House Manager has just phoned to say that no-one is allowed in tomorrow because the assessors have not yet had time to go in and check that it’s safe.
At least we have power at home and I can check work phone and e-mail messages, but without my computer files I can’t do much else. If only I’d know there was going to be an earthquake I’d have brought a few projects home to work on. It looks like tomorrow will be a day of watching the internet and playing Wordscraper on Facebook. I’m just so lucky not to be having to clear debris and breakages!
“It seems I’m forced to stay at home
and maybe write a dogg’rel poem.”
Keep safe Ruth… all good in the big picture I hope!

This is such a good example of why storing files ‘in the cloud’ is helpful. If your documents were stored at perhaps Google Docs or using Dropbox you’d just be able to keep on working from home.
But then on the other hand, a day off is surely merited by the recent events!

Dear Miraz, I know, I know! In fact I had been considering Google Doc’s in recent weeks, and was offput by news about Google accounts being hacked. Of course VolCan has a good backup system, with backups taken offsite. A
colleague was able to put a backup stick in her home laptop, unzip the files, find the one file I wanted, and e-mail it to me at home. I’ve actually been too busy fielding phone calls and e-mails to do any other work, but I may – or I may just sit in the sun, it’s 22 degrees here.

Hi Ruth,
I haven’t kept up to date on any Google hacking, but it’s likely to have been connected with people who didn’t use sensible passwords or keep those passwords secure.
These days everything could be hacked. As a giant company, it’s in Google’s interests to keep their stuff secure and to fix any problems immediately.
I’m glad you were able to access the files you need.
Take a look at Dropbox too – it’s free, with a paid option. I rely on it to give me the files I need when and where I need them.
Meanwhile I suggest you make the most of an unplanned day off and enjoy the sunshine. 🙂
