This author certainly knows how to maintain emotional tension, and I found the start of the book compelling. However the two parallel stories started to pall by the time I was half way through its 600 pages, and it was the snippets of London life that kept my interest. The exploration of the reasons why we choose different relationships is well done, but the book fails to meet the high standard set by Shriver’s earlier work “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”
