This great initiative is a socially engaging art project, part of the Art Beat programme in the Restart mall.
You need to get in today or tomorrow to take advantage of the opportunity to borrow a bike for free. The bikes have been lent by friends and family of Rosalee Jenkin, the fine arts graduate whose idea it is. You just have to supply a phone number, ID, and leave something of value as security. There’s no charge, as the point of the project is to encourage alternative forms of trade and build trust.
Now all we need are more dedicated cycleways!
“This art project I really like.
Are you enticed to try a bike?”

Please post a picture of you riding one of these Ruth.
This is such a good idea. I’d love to borrow a bike as I haven’t cycled for a long time and this is an excellent way to give it a try again.
Sorry, Carol. I can’t ride and take a photo at the same time.
Juliet, it’s been a few years for me too. I’m waiting for the separated cycleways, but not holding my breath.
We had a scheme like this in Porirua for a short time. It was ended when too many bikes went missing or were dumped. I hope that by leaving something as security this venture went well. Christchurch is made for cycling – or it was once.
It’s a pity this scheme was just for four days, and I hope it may be revived when the transport plan is more sorted.
