This three-wheeled vehicle makes a distinct buzzing sound as it moves.
It’s a Piaggio Ape (Ape is Italian for bee) powered by a 50 cc two stroke engine, and is the smallest self-powered coffee machine in the country. Happily for me they sell hot chocolate too.
“Digby Whitlock is the man
inside this little coffee van.”

How cute and how much more mobile accessibility to coffee has become in the last few years. When I first came to Wellington the very first mobile coffee cart was introduced on the waterfront which has now become full with not just coffee carts but little holes in the wall and a great cafe at the airport.
It’s great the way coffee (and other hot drinks for those of us who don’t ‘do’ coffee) has become so much more available. I’m amazed to see so many small coffee shops in vans and portacoms springing up amid Christchurch’s rubble-strewn sections.
I spotted a coffee caravan parked in a rest area as we left Hastings today. But in a clever move it is also very near to a large road working crew who look to have plenty of work ahead of them to build a passing lane. Hot drinks obviously draw in the consumers Ruth. I love the little red buzzing cart:-)
The beauty of mobile coffee vans is that they can move to wherever the people are…. and move on when they want to.
