When I opened the green wheelie bin this katydid hopped out.
I think it may have been gorging on the green matter inside the bin. Katydids (kikihipounamu) are leaf chewers, and can cause plant damage. I don’t know where this one went next, but I hope it’s not injuring my plants.
“I opened up the green bin’s lid
and found a wayward katydid.”

I love the “singing” noises Katydids make on summer nights but I don’t like them eating the brand new rose buds. This one must be braving the winter conditions but maybe it was warmer in the wheelie bin with the foliage.
The Maori name is so descriptive of the sound and the beautiful green colour.
They are a beautiful colour, aren’t they? I’d much rather they munched what’s in the wheelie bin than what’s growing in the garden.
