To see the sun today was wonderful. Last Wednesday was the coldest day ever recorded in Christchurch, with a “high” of 0.4 degrees. Today the temperature reached ten degrees. The roads are clear and dry, although pockets of snow remain in shaded areas. The snow disappeared from most of the garden, but hung around near the north fence where the sun didn’t reach it.
A few plants were broken, but some flowers have come through unscathed. Daphne scents the air again. We’re lucky not to have had tree branches come down, as so many did. Leaves were raked and swept and the patio soon dried out. We hung out washing and it dried. It seems as though life is back to what now passes for normal.
“Two days we were cut off by snow
with ”highs” barely above zero.”

It must have felt so cold! And now you will be appreciating the sun more than ever. The half-melted silverbeet patch certainly looks rather lovely.
The snow is most attractive to look at, but not fun to live with for very long.
It sounds as if another icy blast is on its way but let’s hope it dumps all the snow on the mountains rather than on Christchurch again. I’m glad you saw some sunshine today.
Thanks, OG. I’m certainly hoping we don’t see any more white stuff for a while.
It did feel wonderful at first – like being inside a snow globe – but that didn’t last. I felt trapped indoors and jumped every time the snow slid off the roof with a thud. It squashed my alstromerias! Strangely, the strawberries and lettuces look as if they’re ok.
Anne, my nerines suffered a similar fate. Thank goodness it looks as though today will be fine and the last drifts of snow should disappear.
I must say ruth, while your picture – and others, present a picturesque view of Christchurch, I do not envy you the bone chilling cold that goes with it. Nor do I envy you the hazards of frost and ice……….I guess you may be in for more of the same later this week.
