This baby bird was perched for hours on our feijoa tree.
I didn’t dare go closer for a photo in case I frightened her. The parents were hovering around, regularly bringing her tasty tidbits and we suspect this was her first time outside the nest. Next morning there was no sign of her, so we can only hope she managed to fly back home before it got dark.

and venture out on life’s big quest.”

Baby blackbirds are very vulnerable. I think it is something to do with their tail feathers not being fully developed when they first leave the nest.
We have a passing parade of chirruping fledglings calling to their hard working parents from the Magnolia tree alongside our fence.
Nice photo Ruth
I remember watching a nest of baby blackbirds venturing out on a branch, getting ready to fly – I wrote about it at the end of A Cup of Sunlight. It was interesting to see how tentative they were, and how long they just sat there. Unfortunately I didn’t catch them in the moment of first flight.
