Ruth's Reflections

Hotel Lussemburgo

Our double room is E110 per night, including breakfast.  It has more space than our room in Glastonbury, but the bathroom is even smaller.  The toilet juts into the shower space and doubles as a bidet.  When showering you are continually brushing against the (scrupulously clean) shower curtain, and I need to open the door to have enough space to dry myself.

Our double bed is two single beds bolted together with an extra long headboard so the room could easily become a twin.  The shutters on to the street don’t open, so the room is a little dark, but it’s good to be able to leave the windows open and hear the street sounds.  Louise’s single room on the other side has a shared balcony looking onto backyards, with room to sit.  There’s lots of green there, pots with herbs and carefully cultivated oxalis, and a scented jasmine bush.  Breakfast is rolls with ham, cheese, and fruit, plus tea and coffee.  I was able to get a pot of water and a tea bag so I could have extra weak tea – bliss!  We met an American woman, Jenny, who translated my needs to Lucia, who has no English.

Jenny also told us that this is a special Culture Week in Italy, and because of this all museums and archaelogical sites are free until Sunday which is an unexpected bonus, and makes up for the train ripoff.   Jenny, from Nebraska, had heard of New Zealand because she and her husband are fans of The Flight of the Conchords, and she was impressed that Louise had often seen them perform live in Wellington.

“An intro to Italian way
comes with this place we’ve chose to stay.”
