This afternoon we went to another children’s movie, again chosen because of Stephen’s reviewing duties. School holidays have started and there were about twenty people in the cinema, most of them of primary school age. “Nim’s Island” is a standard young girls’ fantasy story, with no scary bits, and one scene reminiscent of “Whale Rider”. The tropical island is pretty and the animal characters delightful, especially the pelican. Nim is well portrayed by Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), and Jodie Foster plays an obsessive agoraphobic who eventually overcomes her fears. The occasional use of cardboard cutouts, rather than hi-tech digital, seemed appropriate to the story. This is a film everyone can enjoy, with plenty of wholesome heroism.
“I liked the friendly pelican
Who reunited girl and man.”
